No. 7 Tartans Defeat Bethany Behind Multiple Goals

(BETHANY, W.Va.) – Junior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) had a career day for the No. 7 Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team as it defeated Bethany College on the road by a 6-2 score. Tassano registered seven points for the Tartans with three goals and an assist. The win moves the Tartans record to 7-1 on the season as the Bison fall to 1-6.

Tassano opened the game's scoring with a shot in the 35th minute after junior Christopher Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) headed down a ball to Tassano's feet who put the shot past the Bison keeper. Tassano then assisted on a goal by junior Cole Christensen (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) a minute later on a play that started with a pass forward from sophomore Brandon Peck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic).

Before the period ended, the Tartans earned a free kick with time running down. Junior Matt Sarett (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) put the free kick past the keeper for the Cardinal and Gray three-goal advantage.

The Bison ended the Tartans shutout bid in the 53rd minute when Nick Turner scored past junior keeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) to pull the home team within two goals.

Tassano then struck again in the 65th minute with the assist coming from senior outside back Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills).

A minute later, junior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) was taken down in the box awarding a penalty kick to the Tartans. Bryant scored for the second time this season, converting his second penalty kick opportunity.

Tassano finished the Tartans scoring on the day with his third goal in the 74th minute. Bryant was fouled in the box awarding Carnegie Mellon another penalty kick which Tassano calmly burried in the back of the net.

Bethany earned its own penalty kick in the 87th minute which Arkangelo James finished past sophomore Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) for the 6-2 final score.

The Tartans will start University Athletic Association play on Sunday, September 30 at home when #9 Washington University visits Pittsburgh at 1:30 p.m.
