Tartans Work for Tie with Brandeis in UAA Action

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Saturday, October 1 and tied the Judges, 1-1, after 110 minutes of play. The Tartans are now 7-1-1 while the Judges are 3-3-2.

Brandeis was a beneficiary of a foul by the Tartans inside the 18-yard box in the 17th minute and were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) saved the PK attempt by Josh Ocel but the rebounded bounced wide and to the foot of Dylan Hennessy who immediately took a shot. That shot was also saved by a diving Lam but Ocel was there to finish the rebound for the first goal of the game.

The Tartans only shot of the first half came off the head of sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) in the 17th minute but it was wide of the goal.

The Tartans played with a man advantage starting in the 50th minute after a Brandeis player received a red card.

In the 76th minute, the Tartans tied the game when sophomore Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill./St. Joseph) fired a free kick that was initially saved by Ben Woodhouse but the keeper didn't secure it and it bounced across the line for the goal.

A minute later a shot by Masciopinto sailed just high and a header by junior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) in the 87th minute was just high of the goal.

Between the shots by Masciopinto and Stinebaugh, Lam made a save on a shot by Christian Hernandez.

In overtime, Stinebaugh had a shot saved by Woodhouse and Lam made a saved on a shot by Evan Jastremski in the second overtime period to keep the score tied.

The Tartans will host Pitt.-Greensburg on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. before they travel to New York, N.Y. to face New York University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.
