First Half Surge Propels Tartans to 3-0 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team scored three first half goals in route to a 3-0 victory against Grove City College on Friday, September 20. The Tartans improved to 4-3 with the win while the Wolverines dropped to 1-6-1.

Junior Jordi Long (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) struck first for the Tartans in the fifth minute when he drove a shot through the defense and past the keeper for his first goal of the season. He collected a pass out by the defense after sophomore Jason Edmunds (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) served a ball in the box from the right side of the 18-yard box.

In the 22nd minute, senior Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from senior Alex Dziadosz (Boxford, Mass. / Phillips Academy Andover). Following a throw-in deep in the Tartans' offensive side by Edmunds into Long, Long chipped a pass to the far post where Dziadosz headed it back to the six-yard box to Cohen's feet. Cohen then turned on a defender and put it in the opposite corner for the score.

Sixteen minutes later, freshman Josh Baugh (Boynton Beach, Fla. / Boca Prep) recorded his first career score when he finished off a combination with senior Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) and freshman Seiya Otani (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook). Painter found Otani with a through ball left of the goal. Otani then one-timed a low pass across the box for Baugh who one-touched the shot to the opposite post.

The Tartans had two more shots on goal in the second period while junior Alex Singh (Golden, Colo. / Lakewood) and sophomore Ethan Kalis (Riverwoods, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) split time in net for the shared shutout.

The Tartans next host fifth-ranked John Carroll University on Sunday, September 22 at 3:00 p.m.
