Tartans Open Home Season with 2-1 Victory Against Westminster

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – For the second straight game, junior Ethan Vertal recorded two goals for the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team and the Tartans opened the home season with a 2-1 victory against Westminster College on Thursday, September 8 to move its record to 3-0 for the season. The Titans drop to 1-2.

"We played well and defended well for almost all of the game. It was exciting to see a dominating performance for our first home game. We are excited to play nationally-ranked John Carroll this weekend and for the next home game in front of the fans."

  • Vertal scored both goals for the Tartans with the first coming in the 13th minute and the second in the 22nd minute.
  • Seniors Jason Edmunds and Dante Mancini assisted on the first goal after Mancini sent a long pass down the right side of the field which Edmunds one-touched to the near post for Vertal.
  • Sophomore Alejandro Fernandez assisted on the second goal after Schlingemann sent a long pass down the left side of the field for Fernandez who dribbled on the end line and then passed the ball across the box for Vertal's easy finish.
  • Westminster cut into the Tartans' lead in the 78th minute with a goal by Connor Schmidt.
  • Freshman Liam Ryan earned his second win of the season in goal recording one save.

  • Vertal has scored two goals in each of the past two games.
  • Fernandez has recorded at least one assist in each game this season.
