Tartans Fall in Nail-Biter to #24 Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to face 24th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, November 5 in the last regular season game of the season. The Tartans took an early lead but succumbed to the Spartans by a 3-2 score, finishing the regular season with an 11-4-1 overall record and a 3-4 mark in University Athletic Association play. The Spartans finish 10-3-3 and 5-1-1.

Inside The Box Score

  • The first goal of the game came in the sixth minute when junior Diederik Schlingemann scored his first goal of the season following a throw-in into the box by sophomore Billy Boucuvalas.
  • The Spartans tied the match with less than two minutes to play in the first half on a goal by Alex Rumleanschi.
  • In the 64th minute, a shot by the Spartans hit the crossbar and Kysen Kroeger was there to knock in the rebound for the 2-1 lead.
  • Four minutes later, Alex Lippiatt scored a long-distance free kick that deflected off a defender's head and past freshman Liam Ryan in net for the Tartans.
  • Freshman Zach Schonwetter had a shot stopped by CWRU's keeper in the 75th minute.
  • Sophomore Alejandro Fernandez put a shot on goal in the 87th minute just ahead of the Tartans scoring in the early part of the 88th minute when sophomore Eli Kampine finished a bouncing ball in the box.

Notes

  • The Tartans finish fourth in the UAA, their highest finish since a second-place showing in 2016.
  • The Tartans are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll and are ranked fourth in Region VII, one slot behind Case Western Reserve.
