Kaku and Bamforth Receive UAA and ECAC Recognition

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University divers, junior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Gabriel Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS), were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as divers of the week. Bamforth receives his second honor this season while Kaku is recognized for the first time.

Kaku achieved her second NCAA qualifying score on the 1-meter board while achieving her first qualifying score on the 3-meter board at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational. Kaku placed second on the 1-meter with a score of 442.50 but had a higher score of 450.90 in the preliminaries. The junior was third on the 3-meter board with a season-best score of 450.80.

Bamforth solidified his place at the 2016 NCAA Diving Regional to be held in March with two additional qualifying scores at Kenyon. Bamforth won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events while resetting his own school record on each board. On Friday, Bamforth tallied 498.10 points on the 3-meter board while he returned to the diving well on Saturday to post a score of 507.45 on the 1-meter board, 64.6 points better than his previous season best.

The next date of competition for the diving team will be January 16 at Westminster College against the Titans and the SUNY Geneseo Knights at 1:00 p.m.
