Men’s Swimming Honored by CSCAA for Academics

(NORFOLK, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team was honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a Team Scholar All-America award as six individuals were also named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

The Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The men's team earned a 3.45 GAP for the spring semester and also earned the award following the fall semester in which they recorded a 3.33 team GPA.

Individuals who achieved a 3.50 GPA or better for the year and either met a provisional time standard or competed at the NCAA Championships were honored.

Juniors Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) and Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) competed at the NCAA Championships to earn Scholar All-America recognition while fellow senior Matt Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) and a trio of freshmen, Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason), Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), and Andrew Joyner (Holly Springs, N.C./Tar Heel Springs Academy), earned Scholar All-America Honorable Mention.

Bamforth set a new school record on the 1-meter diving board this season while becoming an All-American on the 1-meter board with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The junior also earned All-American Honorable Mention on the 3-meter board with a 16th-place finish. A civil and environmental engineer, Bamforth also excelled in the classroom, earning a 3.93 GPA for the academic year.

Winston is an information systems major who recorded a 3.91 GPA for the year and competed at the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career after qualifying in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also helped set the school record in the 400-yard medley relay.

Matt Chu finished the year with a 3.78 GPA as an electrical and computer engineering student. He earned honorable mention honors from the CSCAA for meeting the provisional time standard in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Britton closed out his freshman year with a 4.00 GPA while taking classes toward an information systems degree. He achieved a provisional qualifying mark in the 100-yard backstroke. Gonzalez provisionally qualified for the NCAA's in the 200-yard freestyle while maintaining a 3.64 GPA in mechanically engineering. Both Britton and Gonzalez were part of the 400-yard medley relay that set a new school record this year.

Joining the honorable mention group is Joyner who finished 2017-18 with a 3.90 GPA as a business major. His qualifying time came in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
