Tartan Men Win 14 Events in First Meet of Season at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team began the 2018-2019 season with a dual meet victory at Case Western Reserve University, 206-94.

The Tartans won both the relay events to earn 22 points for the meet while they picked up 13 individual event wins.

Freshman Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:41.16 with freshman Doug Johnson (Brea, Calif. / Brea Olinda) finishing second and sophomore Andrew Joyner (Holly Springs, N.C. / Tar Heel Springs Academy) touching third.

Freshman Baris Denizli (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick) earned two wins in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.94 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.64, while sophomore Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.69. Britton also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 51.15.

Senior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) picked up two victories in the breaststroke events with a time of 57.77 in the 100-yard race and a time of 2:08.96 in the 200-yard race. Senior Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif. / Bishop Alemany) won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.20 with junior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) touching first in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.68.

The 200-yard backstroke was won by freshman Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton) in 1:53.78 with Dauksher placing second in 1:54.42.

In diving, senior Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) earned 295.80 points in the 1-meter event to place first, as he won the 3-meter event with 273.30 points. Freshman Judson Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) placed second in the 3-meter event with 263.93 points and second in the 1-meter event with 275.48 points.

Dauksher earned the last individual victory of the day when he finished the 400-yard IM in 4:09.91.

The Tartans will next compete on Saturday, November 10 when Washington and Lee University visits Pittsburgh for an 11:30 a.m. meet.
