Britton Wins 100 Backstroke at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team is in fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships with one day left to swim. The meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago.

Sophomore Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) earned the UAA Championship in the 100-yard backstroke after out-racing Emory's Colin LaFave to touch in 48.88.

Senior Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) closed his UAA career with a second-place finish on the 3-meter diving board after scoring 523.80 points in the finals. Freshman Judson Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) took third in the event with 518.85 points while his brother James was fifth on the 3-meter with a career-best score of 499.45 points.

Freshman Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) collected a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM, touching the wall in 3:58.15. During the preliminary round he finished in a career-best 3:56.58 to lead the Tartans.

Sophomore Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) scored 25 points for the Tartans with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching in 1:40.73.

Senior Winston Chu (Warren, N.J. / Saint Peter's Prep) was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Tartans with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 56.06.

The 800-yard freestyle relay closed the meet with a fourth-place finish in 6:43.60. The time by Dauksher, Gonzalez, freshman Daniel Ng (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson), and junior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) is better than last year's accepted time to the NCAA meet. The 200-yard medley relay also finished fourth on Friday.

The Tartans will continue action on Saturday in the final day of competition at the UAA Championships.
