Four Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Honors
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University athletes were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Google Cloud At-Large Academic All-District selections. Senior women's golfer Carly Jordan (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) and junior swimmer Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) were selected to the women's team while senior diver Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) and sophomore swimmer Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) were selected to the men's team.
All four are first-time honorees and will represent District 4, comprised of all the Division III schools in Pennsylvania, on the national ballot for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration. To be eligible for the award, athletes must be starters or significant reserves in at least their sophomore season and carry a minimum GPA of 3.30.
Bamforth carries a 3.73 GPA in civil and environmental engineering, has been nominated for senior leadership recognition by his academic advisor, is an Andrew Carnegie Society Scholar, an RA, a staff writer for the school newspaper and volunteered at an after-school program for more than two years. As a creative writing minor, Bamforth won an Adamson Award for fiction in 2018. Bamforth became the Tartans first male diver to finish in the top 16 at nationals as a freshman in 2016 and went on to earn two All-America honors and three All-America Honorable Mention honors. He is also a two-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion on the 1-meter board and holds the school record on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
Britton has maintained a 4.0 GPA through three semesters as an information systems major while co-leading a Bible study for freshman students through Pittsburgh Metro Cru and volunteering during Carnegie Mellon's annual 1000-plus Day of Service. Britton is a Boeing Scholarship Winner, won an entrepreneurship class project that raised $2,000 for local charities, and earned the NCAA's Elite 90 Award at this year's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for having the highest GPA among competitors in at least their sophomore year. In the water, Britton set seven school records this season, was the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke UAA Champion and performed to All-America Honorable Mention standards in both backstroke events at the NCAA Championships.
Nicklas-Morris holds a 3.91 GPA in psychology with a double minor in art and design. Leaning more towards a profession in graphic design, Nicklas-Morris has taken courses at Rhode Island School of Design and will study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, this summer which she earned several scholarships to attend. She combines her passion for volunteering and art with the national organization Design for America. With the organization, Nicklas-Morris spends Sunday afternoon's at Pleasant Valley Men's Shelter where she leads a project called art2connect, giving members an outlet for expression. The junior is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) where she volunteers with Field Day and Special Olympics while joining other initiatives for SAAC. As a swimmer, Nicklas-Morris holds five school records and has competed at the NCAA Championships all three seasons, earning three All-America honors and six All-America Honorable Mention, including three top 16 finishes this year.
Jordan has maintained a 3.85 GPA in the Tepper School of Business as a business administration major with concentrations in finance and accounting and an additional major in statistics. Jordan has been an intern at Harvey & Company, LLC as a private equity research intern, at Wells Fargo & Company as a wealth and investment management analyst and at Credit Suisse Group in New York City as a summer analyst. She has accepted a position at Credit Suisse Group where she'll begin her career as an incoming analyst in the private fund group. She was the lead fundraiser for Carnegie Mellon's Annual Fund, a captain of the women's golf team and a four-year member of Smart Woman Securities at Carnegie Mellon, holding offices of investment board analyst and chief investment officer.
On the golf course, Jordan helped lead the 2018 team to fifth-place at the NCAA Championships in just the fourth year of the program. She was the 2016 University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Golf Rookie of the Year and a WGCA All-American Scholar last spring. Jordan finished her career with seven top-three finishes and is second in program history with a two-round score of 148 which she earned at the Generals Invitational this past fall. She steadily improved throughout her career and finished her senior campaign with a personal-best 78.9 scoring average after 16 rounds of play.
