Tartans Set Three School Records at Kenyon

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - Coming off an excellent performance at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team set three new school records at the Kenyon College Fast Chance Invitational on Saturday, February 22.

Freshman Alex Chiu (Sewell, N.J. / Washington Township) set the 100-yard butterfly record with a swim of 49.29 only to be topped by junior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) in the second heat with a time of 48.25. Britton's time was the best of the day in the 100-yard butterfly and marks his third individual school record of the year. Both Chiu and Britton provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in the event.

Sophomore Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) swam a career-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke when he finished first overall in 55.74. He later swam the 200-yard breaststroke and set a new school record with a time of 2:03.60, nine seconds better than his previous top time. With the times, Daniel has the chance to be invited to the NCAA Championships in March.

Freshman John McNab (Westport, Conn. / Staples) had a career-best time in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 46.42 to place second to lead the Tartans in the event. Junior Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) swam a career-best time in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.27, more than four seconds faster than his previous swim.

Freshman Aleksander Tarczynski (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) improved his 400-yard IM time by more than four seconds and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:56.75.

The 400-yard medley relay of Britton, Daniel, sophomore Sean Ream (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) and senior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) swam a time trial and set a new school record with a time of 3:17.90. The record marks the fourth relay record of the season for both Britton and Hawke.

The NCAA will announce individuals and relays invited to the 2020 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday, February 27.
