Tartans Sweep Doubles in Tough 5-4 Loss

(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The #18 Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team fell victim in a 5-4 match to #20 University of Texas-Tyler who is now 11-1 on the season. The Tartans finished their California trip with a 7-3 overall mark.

After strong doubles play, the Tartans held a 3-0 lead but couldn't come up with two singles match wins to earn the victory.

Freshmen Kosuke Hasegawa (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) won their third No. 2 doubles match of the week with an 8-2 showing over Ryan Spencer and Kevin Singer. Sophomores Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and Thomas Cooper (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) pulled in an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles over Jon Karsten and Ramon Martinez before senior Duke Miller (Poway, Calif./Poway) and sophomore Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) won 9-8(8-6) at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Harsha Rao (Severn, Md./Old Mill) won the fourth and final point for the Tartans at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Hasegawa and freshman Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) fell in three sets after winning the first set by identical 6-1 scores.

The Tartans will next face University of Mary Washington on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
