Men's Tennis named ITA All-Academic Team; Seven Named Scholar-Athletes

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team was honored for the fifth straight season and 12th time in the last 13 years by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an ITA All-Academic Team. In addition, seven players were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

Three Carnegie Mellon University athletes have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Team for both the men and the women with two being honored for the second straight year. Senior tennis athlete Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) is joined by senior golfer Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) on the first team while sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) found a spot on the second team.

Junior Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India / IMG Pendleton School) of the Carnegie Mellon University men’s tennis team competed at the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships Thursday, May 22. This year's championships are being held at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. It marked the second trip to the championships for Heaney-Secord and the first for Alla.

CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its regional award winners on Wednesday, May 14 and both head coach Andrew Girard and assistant coach Mike Belmonte were honored on the men’s side for the Atlantic South Region. Girard was named Wilson/ITA Region Coach of the Year while Belmonte was named Assistant Region Coach of the Year.

The fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men’s tennis team hosted ninth-ranked Case Western Reserve University in the 2014 NCAA Division III Regional Championship on Sunday, May 11. The Tartans dropped a hard-fought match to the Spartans, 5-4.

The fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men’s tennis team competed in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships Saturday, May 10, and advanced with a 5-0 victory over Otterbein University. The win moves the Tartans’ dual-match record to 18-6, as the Cardinals end their season at 19-5. Carnegie Mellon is hosting the three-day NCAA Regional.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team has been selected to the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship and named a host of the first, second and third rounds beginning Friday, May 9 through Sunday, May 10. The Tartans received an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing second at the University Athletic Association Championship and moved up to number five in the national rankings.

With the win, the Tartans improve to 16-5 overall while the Yellowjackets move to 13-5.

The Carnegie Mellon University Tartans received strong doubles play that continued on to singles as the ninth-ranked team in the nation defeated visiting 11th-ranked Kenyon College 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at home in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Tartans improve to 15-5 on the year as the Lords fall to 15-7.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team broke into the top 10 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Rankings when the most recent rankings were released late on April 10. The men join the women's team, who moved up to eighth, in the top 10 for the first time since 2009-10. The Tartan men moved from No. 11 to No. 9 after finishing off a nine-match stretch versus nationally ranked opponents.
