Doubles Teams and Singles Players Advance to Semifinals at ITA Southeast Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team continued its success at the ITA Southeast Regional with two doubles teams and two singles players advancing to the semifinals.

The senior pair of Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) will face their teammates, junior Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) in the semifinals after both teams won twice on Saturday.

Levine and Downing won by scores of 8-3 and 8-2, while Calzolano and Boppana won twice by an 8-4 score.

Levine got through a three-set match in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, against Scott Thygesen of Johns Hopkins University before powering through the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Josh Moskovitz of Haverford College. He'll face Austin Gu of Johns Hopkins in the semifinals after Gu topped Boppana in the quarterfinals by a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 score.

Downing, who is on the opposite side of the bracket from Levine, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the round of 16 and a 6-4, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals. Downing's first win came against Wilkes University's Courtney Murphy while his second was against Matthew Miles of the University of Mary Washington.

Semifinal action will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
