#10 Tartans Place Seventh at ITA National Team Indoor Championship

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team defeated 13th-ranked Whitman College, 5-0, on Sunday in the seventh-place match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Tartans are now 4-3 on the year following their win at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Cleveland, Ohio.

Carnegie Mellow swept doubles play with the senior tandem of Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) claiming the first point with an 8-4 decision at the top spot. The Tartans third doubles team of seniors Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and Yannick Bloem (Geneva, Switzerland / EPFL, Lausanne) then won by the identical score, before junior Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) closed out doubles play with an 8-5 win at number two.

Freshman Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School)made the score 4-0 with a straight set win at fourth singles. The junior won by the scores of 6-1, 6-1. Downing then sealed the Cardinal and Gray victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles.

The Tartans will next be in action on Sunday, March 3 when Division I George Washington University travels to Pittsburgh.
