#15 Tartans Top Division I Duquesne in Midweek Match

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted Division I Duquesne University for a midweek match on Tuesday, April 2. The Tartans defeated the Dukes, 4-2, with the match played by Division I rules and to decision. The Tartans are now 6-6 for the season.

The Tartans earned all four of their points in singles play. Sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) earned a win at fourth singles when junior Jared Isaacs retired with an injury as Boppana led 5-3 in the first set. Senior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) then won 6-1, 6-3 at second singles against sophomore Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal to give the Tartans a 2-1 win after Duquense earned the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles.

A third point went on the board for the Tartans when freshman Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) won 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2) at fifth singles against freshman Graham Conron. Senior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) fell in three sets to senior Chris Carrao at first singles before freshman Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) won 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) at sixth singles versus sophomore Joey Matthews.

The Tartans will next host 16th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m.
