#14 Tartans Takedown #36 NYU at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played 36th-ranked NYU in the consolation semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Tartans defeated the Violets 5-0 and are now 9-8 on the season.

The match started with a sweep in doubles play for Carnegie Mellon. The tandem of senior Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and junior Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) claimed the first point with an 8-2 win in the second spot. The duo of seniors Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) then won 8-4 at the top spot before sophomores Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) and Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) finished the sweep with an 8-6 victory.

Downing won a straight set match at second singles (6-2, 6-0) to give the Tartans a 4-0 edge. Arora then sealed the win with a 6-0, 6-4 win at six singles.

The Tartans will now face 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the fifth-place match. This will mark the third time this season the Tartans have played the Spartans with each winning a match.
