#14 Tartans Top Southern Virginia 5-4

(WEXFORD, Pa.) - The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team continued its indoor season with a 5-4 win against Southern Virginia University Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania. The Tartans are now 2-1 for the season while the Knights move to 4-1.

The Tartans trailed 2-1 following doubles play with their lone win coming at the third spot. The tandem of senior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) and junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) claimed the second point of the match with an 8-6 win.

The Cardinal and Gray took the first two points in singles play winning at the third and second spots to take a 3-2 win before Virginia Southern knotted the score at 3-3 with a in at fourth singles. Sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) first won 6-3, 6-2 at third singles before Levin won 6-3, 7-5 at the second spot.

Freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) won the Tartans fourth point with a 6-4, 6-0 win at sixth singles before sophomore Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) sealed the Tartans victory winning a three-set match at fifth singles 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

The Tartans will be back on the courts Saturday, February 15 with a 2:00 pm match against 26th-ranked Swarthmore College at the Oxford Athletic Club.
