(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team will compete for the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship after compiling a regular season record of 9-2. The Tartans will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for the first, second and third rounds and will open play in the second round against Houghton College on Saturday, May 15.

This tournament selection is the seventh for the men's tennis program and second under head coach Mike Belmonte who is in his fourth season as head coach of the Tartans after serving as an assistant since 2008.

The Tartans received an at-large bid to the tournament and its match-up with Houghton will be a program first. Houghton enters the match with a 10-3 record and winners of the Empire 8 Conference. Should the Tartans advance, they will face the winner of George Fox (10-4) and Oglethorpe (13-1) on May 16 for a chance to play in the quarterfinals for the second time in school history, with the last time coming in 2010.

Houghton is led by three seniors who each pair with an underclassman for doubles. Two of the seniors play the top two spots in singles with each holding a 10-match winning streak, just like the team.

The Tartans are young with sophomores and freshmen in the lineup for the past four matches and have played a mix of Division I, II, and III opponents with an 8-0 record against those in Division III.

All match times are still to be determined and will be announced as soon as information is available.
