Tartans Begin 2021-22 Campaign at Kenyon Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its season at the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.

Four Tartans won their opening matches of singles play on Saturday. Sophomore Derek Wong (La Jolla, Calif. / Francis Parker) won in Flight C Singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, against Daniel Garcia of Denison while sophomore Jaden D'Abreo (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) and sophomore Nicholas Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Academy) each won in Flight D by 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 scores, respectively. D'Abreo topped Ryan Patrick of Denison with Wernink topping James Dill of Oberlin. Sophomore Arjan Bedi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) beat Sebastien Naginski of Oberlin, 6-2, 6-0 in Flight E.

In doubles action, junior Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) and Wong advanced to the finals of Flight A with an 8-5 win against Andy Mackler and Blake Eason of Denison and an 8-6 win against Chaitanya Aduru and Sahil Dayal of Case Western Reserve.

Bedi and D'Abreo won their Flight B opening match 8-6 over Akshat Agarwal and Ryan Patrick of Denison before falling 8-4 to Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang of Case Western Reserve.

On Saturday, Wernink would defeat Anthony Kanam of Case Western Reserve, 6-1, 6-4, before falling in the finals of Flight D to Casey Hishninuma of Case Western Reserve, 6-3, 6-4.

Bedi lost his second singles match of the tournament in three sets before topping Jake Louiselle of Denison in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

In doubles play on Saturday, Poh and Wong fell to Thomas Kallarakal and Luis Andres Platas of Kenyon 8-2.

The Tartans will host their own invitational on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25 before playing in the ITA Southeast Regional the first weekend of October.
