Tartans Top RPI 5-4

(ORLANDO, Fla.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team continued play on its spring trip to Florida and defeated RPI 5-4 on Sunday morning. The Tartans even their overall at 4-4 while RPI is now 2-2.

The Tartans dropped the first point in doubles play, but took a 2-1 lead following wins at the top and third spots. The first point came when Tartans third double tandem of senior Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) and junior Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) won 8-6. The Cardinal and Gray top duo of juniors Raahil Doshi (Singapore, Singapore / Anglo - Chinese School (Independent), Singapore) and Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) also won by an 8-6 score to end doubles play.

RPI evened the score at 2-2, but Gibson put the Tartans back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 win at five singles. Another RPI victory saw the Tartans trail 3-2. The next two points were recorded by the Tartans to seal the victory. First, Doshi won at third singles by the scores of 7-5, 6-3 followed by a 6-4, 6-3 win by freshman William Wang (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) at the six spot.

The Tartans will return to the court on Tuesday, March 8, with a 3:00 p.m. match against Kenyon College at the USTA Campus.
