#24 Tartans Defeat NYU at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 24th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played NYU in the consolation semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Tartans defeated the Violets 5-4 and are now 7-9 on the season as the Violets move to 5-5.

How it Happened

  • Carnegie Mellon led 2-1 following double picking up wins at the first and third spots.
  • Junior Derek Wong and freshman Akshay Joshi grabbed the Tartans first point of the match when they won 8-6 at one doubles.
  • The Tartans third doubles pair of senior Raahil Doshi and junior Jaden D'Abreo won by the identical score at three doubles to make the score 2-0.  
  • NYU grabbed the first two points of singles with wins at the top two spots before freshman Sebastien Lhuillier won a three-set match at six singles to knot the score at 3-all. Lhuillier won by the scores of 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
  • The Violets took the point at four singles, but then Joshi tied the score again with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at five singles.
  • The match came down to three singles and sophomore William Wang won the third three-set match for the Tartans to seal the win. The sophomore posted scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

  • The Tartans will now face Brandeis University at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the fifth-place match.
