Gates Records Career-Best Mile Time at Bucknell Winter Classic

(LEWISBURG, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed in the unscored Bucknell Winter Classic amongst colleges from Divisions I, II and III on Saturday, February 9.

Senior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) ran a career-best time of 4:18.50 in the mile to place third with sophomore George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) claiming fifth-place with a time of 4:21.01.

In the 3,000-meter run, junior Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) finished third and fourth with times of 8:41.45 and 8:42.21, respectively.

Sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 1:55.01 in the 800-meter run to take second. Freshman Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) placed eighth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:33.08.

Sophomore Mike McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) cleared a height of 1.84 meters in the high jump to place fourth.

The 4x400 relay finished the meet with a fourth place finish as junior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity), sophomore Douglas O'Connell (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep), Vandenberg, and senior Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) crossed the line in 3:27.10 for a season best.

The team will be in action again on Saturday, February 16 at Kent State University in Ohio.
