Tartans Finish Second at Home Quad Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished second at its annual home quad meet on Saturday, April 6 as Penn State Behrend finished in first with 207 points to the Tartans 192. The Tartans did win seven events during the afternoon.

Junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) won both the shot put and hammer throw with marks of 15.70m and 48.20m, respectively, and finished second in the discus with a mark of 45.27m. Senior Patrick Robinson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.96m while sophomore Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) finished third in the discus with a mark of 45.18m.

Junior David Markowitz (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) finished third in the javelin throw with a mark of 49.68m.

On the track, junior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) won the 1,500-meter run in 4:00.70 with sophomore Douglas O'Connell (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep) finishing second in 4:04.22 and junior Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) taking third place in 4:04.57.

Newby and Murphy later ran the 3,000-meter run and finished second and third behind sophomore teammate Joe Pane (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in 9:06.37. Newby recorded a time of 9:07.63 with Murphy finishing in 9:08.40.

Freshman Ben Neiman (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.10 with senior Ben Nealy (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) taking second in the 400-meter run in 51.58.

Junior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won the 400-meter hurdles in 57.82 with Neiman finishing third in 1:00.18. Freshman Thomas Mayo-Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye) finished second in the 800-meter run 1:59.21 while sophomore Ben Walker (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) won his heat and finished seventh overall in 2:05.66.

Freshman Brian Bollens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:13.25 while the 4x100 meter relay team of junior  Max Wilkin (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area), senior Joel Lu (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar), junior Jerome Reano (Albuquerque, N.M./Saint Pius X) and senior Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) placed second in 43.98.

Titus also sprinted in the 100-meter dash and finished second in a season-best time of 11.22 before finishing third in the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 22.56.

The 4x400-meter relay closed the meet with a win as Standish, O'Connell, Titus and sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) crossed the line in 3:23.44.

The team will next compete on Saturday, April 13 at Slippery Rock University and Bucknell University.
