Tartans Win Two Events at Slippery Rock, Run Distance at Bucknell

(SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Slippery Rock University for the Dave Labor Invitational on Saturday, April 13 and came away with two first-place finishes while a handful of distance runners traveled to Bucknell Univeristy for its Outdoor Classic.

Sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) won the 400-meter dash in 48.78 while junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) won the shot put and picked up a second and third-place finish in the hammer throw and discus.

Erra-Hernandez won the shot put with a season-best mark of 16.08m and also finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.80m and third in the discus throw with a mark of 43.58m. Junior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) was third in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.75m.

Thomas Mayo-Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye) was second in the 800-meter run in 1:59.36 as sophomore Eamon Cullinane (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) finished the 1,500-meter run in third place in a time of 4:20.12 before freshman Zach Dell (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.16.

Senior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) finished second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:44.47 with sophomore Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) placing third in 16:10.55.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Mayo-Smith, freshman Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), Vandenberg and sophomore Douglas O'Connell (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep) placed second in 3:23.66.

In the jumping events, senior John Caverhill (Reno, Nev./Reno) was sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.70m while freshman Max Reinertsen (Esko, Minn./Esko) was third in the triple jump with a distance of 11.94m.

At Bucknell, junior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) finished the 5,000-meter run sixth overall and in a career time of 14:41.43 and is currently 15th in the nation. Sophomore Joe Pane (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) ran the 10,000-meter run for the first time this season and finished in 33:40.29.

The team will next compete on Tuesday, April 16 when they travel to Allegheny College for a tri-meet.
