Chang Crushes School Record as Tartans Take Second at Ohio State Tune-Up

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Columbus, Ohio on Friday to compete against tough Division I, II, and III competition in the Ohio State Tune-up. The men netted a second-place finish as a team, falling to Ohio State University by only six-and-a-half points.

Freshman Andrew Chang (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) led the Tartans as he crossed the line of the 60-meter dash in the finals with a time of 7.11 seconds, crushing the school record of 7.14 previously held by Eric Tang (2008). Chang also managed to grab a third-place finish overall in the 200-meter dash stopping the clock at 22.94.

To continue striving for the NCAA Championships, junior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) took first place in the 800-meter run.  His time of 1:53.58 seconds puts him in third place nationally. Vandenberg also holds a top-ten ranking in the 400-meter dash.

Junior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) took the top spot in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:29.76, which also puts him in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) as the team gears up for the UAA Championships next weekend.

Grabbing a one and two finish for the Tartans in the 1,000-meter run, Elliot Watson (Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley School) and Ben Walker (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) crossed the finish line with times of 2:37.50 and 2:38.00, respectively.

Freshman Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) just missed the school record in the pole vault by a centimeter tying for sixth place as he sailed over the pole at 4.52 meters.

The Tartans are ready to head to Boston to compete at Brandeis University for the 2014 UAA  Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend.
