Men’s Track Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2017 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Teams and Carnegie Mellon University was included on each list for the 11th consecutive year. A total of 111 men’s teams and 183 women’s teams earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.

Junior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and senior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) closed the season for the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 27. The meet was held at SPIRE Institute.

Carnegie Mellon University had three track and field athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's and women’s cross country and track and field on Thursday, May 25. On the women’s side, senior Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and junior Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) were honored, along with senior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) garnering accolades on the men’s side. Yee and Cook receive the award for the first time while this marks Norley’s second honor after receiving it following his junior season.

Ten represent the men while five represent the women with three receiving multiple honors.

Senior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) recorded a career-best time, set a stadium record and put his name in the Carnegie Mellon records book once again.

Gary Aldrich, head coach of the Carnegie Mellon University track and field teams, has been named to the U.S.A. coaching staff as the Assistant Throws Coach for the 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championships this summer. The event will take place in London, England, from August 3-14. This marks Aldrich's fifth coaching stint on the international stage.

Carnegie Mellon University junior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events while the coaching staff was honored as the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year. These awards come after the team won its fourth UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, April 23.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s track and field team won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championship behind three first-place finishes and a lot of depth. It marked the fourth outdoor championship for the Tartans and the first time in school history the Tartans won both the indoor and outdoor championship in the same year. The meet was hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual CMU Quad Meet on Saturday, April 1 and won with 227.5 points. Penn State Behrend placed second with 186 points. Sophomore Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) highlighted the day, as he recorded a school record time of 8:41.63 to win the 3,000-meter run.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual Mini Invitational on Saturday, March 25. The Tartans won the event after scoring 283 points with Allegheny College taking second with 90 points. The Tartans swept three top three spots in three events throughout the met.
