Tartans Open Outdoor Season at Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival

(LEXINGTON, VA.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia for the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium on Friday and Saturday. The Tartans turned in four first-place showings and had multiple top-five performances in the first meet of the spring.

"This weekend was an excellent first step in the outdoor season as we prepare for UAAs in April. We had some very nice weather which helped everyone continue on the trend they established in the indoor season," said head coach Gary Aldrich.

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) began his outdoor season with two first-place finishes. The sophomore won the shot put with a throw of 15.51 meters and turned in a first place throw of 46.78 meters in the discus. Freshman Noah Castor (Ewing, N.J. / Ewing) placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 12.50 meters.

Senior Marshall Hoebing (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) threw 56.06 meters to place second in the javelin. Castor placed third in the event with a throw of 51.08. Sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City Area) placed fourth in the hammer with 41.57 meters.

Freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:55. "I was a lot more aggressive today, after my race in the 1500 on Friday which didn't go as well as I expected. I had someone pushing me in the last 200 meters and that made a big difference in my race," said Eversden. Junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed third in the event in 1:57. Walsh won the 1,500-meter run on Friday in a time of 4:05

Sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) won the pole vault clearing 4.57 meters. Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) cleared 1.89 meters in the high jump to place fifth overall. Junior Dhroovaa Khannan (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) placed fourth in the long jump with 6.52 meters. In the triple jump, junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) finished second with a jump of 13.94 meters and sophomore Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed eighth with 12.85 meters.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) placed fifth in 58.83 and sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) finished sixth in 59.07. Senior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) placed third in the 5,000-meters in a time of 15:19, while junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) finished fourth in 15:26. Senior Jacob Halasowski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) turned in a third-place showing in the 10,000-meters in 32:58.

The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies), freshman Mitchell Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch), Grant Johnson, and freshman Thomas Chen (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School) finished fourth overall in a time of 3:30.

The Tartans will compete next at home at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 at Gesling Stadium
