Tartans Cruise to Win at Annual Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual Mini Invitational on Saturday, March 23. The Tartans won the event after scoring 312 points with John Carroll taking second with 103 points. The Tartans swept top three spots in two events throughout the meet.

Leading the sweep of the 400-meter run was senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) with a time of 50.52, followed by freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township), and sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies). Sweeping the 5,000-meter run was junior Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) with the winning time of 14:52, followed by seniors Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) and Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) who finished in 14:47 and 15:18, respectively.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed third with a toss of 43.56 meters. Senior Mashall Hoebing (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) took second in the javelin with a throw of 53.68 meters. Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put with a toss of 15.58 while Stahl took third with 12.23 meters. In the discus, Miller took second with a throw of 48.11 meters, while freshman Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) took third with 38.18 meters. 

Freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) won both the long and triple jumps. The freshman jumped 6.59 meters in the long jump and 13.75 meters in the triple jump. Junior Jamie Greenwell (Celina, Texas / McKinney Christian Academy) took third in the long jump with 6.25 meters, while fellow junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) took fourth with 6.24 meters.  

In the pole vault, sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) won clearing 3.77 meters, and sophomore Dylan Lew (Newtown, Conn. / Newtown) took second clearing 3.62 meters. Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed second in the high jump clearing 1.88 meters, and freshman Nikolas Diamant (Berkeley, Calif. / Berkeley) placed third clearing 1.58 meters.  

Junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) won the steeplechase in a time of 9:34, while fellow junior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) placed second in 9:50. In the 1,500-meter race, junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) won in a time fo 4:01, while junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) closely followed in a time of 4:02. 

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won both the 200-meter and the 100-meter sprints in times of 11.11 and 22.73, respectively. Freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58. Freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) placed second in 57.65 and sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) took third in 58.92 in the 400-meter hurdles.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Desir, Greenwell, freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) and Bennett Jr. took second in a time of 42.70. 

The Tartans will host the Carnegie Mellon Quad on Saturday, March 30 with field events set to start at 10:00 a.m.
