Miller Breaks School Record in Discus Throw, Kalapos Breaks 3,000 Meter School Record

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual Carnegie Mellon Quad on Saturday. The Tartans won the quad with 215 points after turning in 11 first-place finishes. Penn State Behrend placed second with 158 points. The men swept four events and had numerous career-best performances.

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the discus, as he improved upon his school record throw by 0.73 meters with a toss of 49.78 meters, to place him among the top national competitors in the event. "The last couple weeks have been a rough start, but today it seemed to click more or less," said Miller. "Going into the rest of the season, I'm in a much better spot than last year." The sophomore also won the shot put with a throw of 16.14 meters.

The Tartans swept the hammer throw led by sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) who won the event with a distance of 42.71 meters. Miller took second in the hammer with a throw of 39.48, freshman Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) placed third with 36.79 meters and sophomore Marc Edwards (North Versailles, Pa. / East Allegheny) placed fourth with 33.54 meters. Freshman Noah Castor (Ewing, N.J. / Ewing) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 49.48 meters, while senior Marshall Hoebing (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) placed third with a mark of 47.84 meters.

In the triple jump, the Tartans swept the event led by junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) with a mark of 14.07 meters, followed by Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) with 13.26 meters, freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) with 3.18 meters, and Nikolas Diamant (Berkeley, Calif. / Berkeley) with 12.47 meters.

The Tartans also swept the long jump with freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) placing first with a jump of 6.57 meters, followed by Kiefel in second with 6.44 meters, junior Dhroovaa Khannan (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) in third with 6.34 meters. Dauphin took fourth with 6.16 meters.

The Tartans placed first through sixth place in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) broke the school record winning the event in a time of 8:37. Senior Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) placed second in 8:38, senior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) finished third in 8:40, senior Will Mitchell (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) followed in fourth in 8:42, senior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) placed fifth in 8:43, and junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) finished sixth in 8:45.

Freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) finished second in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:00. Senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) won the 800-meters in 1:55. In the 400 meters, freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed first in a time of 50.21, while sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) finished in third in 52.50. Juniors Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) and Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) placed first and second in the steeplechase in times of 9:34 and 9:42, respectively.

Freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 57.05, while sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) finished second in 58.87. Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) tied for second in the high jump clearing 1.88 meters.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Desir, junior Jamie Greenwell (Celina, Texas / McKinney Christian Academy), Narayan and Kiefel finished second in 43.53. The Tartan's 4x400 meter relay team of Johnson, Eversden, Mills and Desir won the event in 3:22.

The Tartans will travel to the Dave Labor Invitational on Saturday, April 6 hosted by Slippery Rock University.
