Four Tartans to Compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University men's and women's track and field athletes have qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be hosted at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, May 23-25. The University of Mount Union and Greater Cleveland Sports Commission are co-hosts for the event.

Seniors Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J. / Madison) and Will Mitchell (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) are joined by junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) and sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) are the four Tartans that will represent Carnegie Mellon at the championships.

Ciriello will compete in the 800-meter run after qualifying with a personal-best time of 2:13.46 at the Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday, May 16. Her time is seeded 20th out of 22 qualifiers. Ciriello is the second straight and third Tartan to qualify for NCAAs in the 800-meter run. Sarah Cook ran in the event a year ago while Courtney Baker competed in the 800 in 2010.

Miller will be competing in two events at the championships. The sophomore will compete in the discus throw and shot put while becoming the first Tartan to compete in two throwing events at the national meet. Miller will enter the meet ranked 10th nationally in the discus with a school record throw of 51.79 meters at the University Athletic Association Championships and 11th in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 16.14 meters at the Tartans annual quad meet.

Yukevich recorded a career-best time in the 1,500-meter run of 3:52.81 at the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University. His time seeds 20th. Mitchell will compete in the 5,000-meter run and his time of 14:29.48 also ranks him 20th heading into the meet. The senior recorded his career-best time at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier Meet on May 13.

The four selections for the Tartan men marks the most in program history and follows a breakout indoor season in which six men earned the right to compete at the national championship.

Miller will be the first Tartan to compete, as the men's discus is scheduled for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Yukevich will also compete on Thursday with the 1,500-meter preliminaries taking place at 4:10 p.m. Miller's second event, the shot put, is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Ciriello will take to the track in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run on Friday at 4:15 p.m., while Mitchell will compete on Saturday at 3:25 p.m. in the finals of the 5,000-meter run.

For each men's individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student- athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.
