Tartans Start Season at Youngstown Invitational

(YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) — The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team opened their 2020 indoor season at the Youngstown State University Collegiate Invite on Friday, January 17. The men competed against a strong field of Division I and Division III runners. 

"I was happy with everyone getting out and competing today. Although it was the first meet of the season, we had many good individual performances today," said head coach Gary Aldrich. 

Senior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) placed fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:18 while fellow senior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed seventh in 4:20. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) placed eighth in 1:56, Yukevich took 12th in 1:58, and Walsh placed 16th in 1:59. 

Senior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:39, senior Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College HS) took third with a time of 8:44 and sophomore Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) placed sixth with a time of 8:48. 

Junior Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) placed 17th in the 60-meter dash in 7.16 and 19th in the 200-meter dash in 22.81. Junior Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) broke his personal record in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.50.  

Senior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) placed 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.38 meters. "I'm really excited about the start of the season and where the Tartans will go," said Dauphin. Dauphin also jumped 6.37 meters in the long jump, placing 21st overall. 

Freshman Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) competed in his first collegiate meet placing 25th overall in the shot put with a heave of 14.36 meters, junior Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran ) placed 23rd in the shot put with mark of 14.53 meters.

Junior Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed ninth in the high jump clearing a height of 1.85 meters. 

The Tartans will be at the Marietta College Pioneer Open tomorrow before competing at Case Western University in the annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 25th.
