Tartans Win Fourth Straight Battle for the Obelisk

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) — The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the Battle for the Obelisk versus Case Western Reserve University to mark the fourth straight Obelisk title for the Tartans. The men won the meet 77-58 versus Case Western and in a combined men's and women's score of 163-108. 

"This win was rewarding in many ways, because of the individual performances and how we competed individually against Case," said head coach Gary Aldrich. "This meet is about stepping up and responding incredibly well to competition and thats what we did today." 

The Tartan men swept the shot put with freshman Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) placing first with a throw of 14.71 meters. Junior Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) placed second with 13.92 meters and freshman Len Huang (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) placed third with 13.26 meters. Junior Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) won the weight throw with a toss of 14.92 meters. 

Senior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) won the triple jump with 13.73 meters, while junior Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed second with 13.11 meters. Dauphin also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 6.39 meters while Sloan also placed second in the high jump clearing 1.70 meters. 

Freshman Noah Lynch (Amesbury, Mass. / Amesbury) placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.00. Junior Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.06. Bennett Jr. also won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.02. 

Sophomore Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) won the 800-meter race in a time of 1:57. Junior Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) placed second in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.94. 

In the mile run, senior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) placed first with a time of 4:22 and senior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed second in a time of 4:23. 

Senior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:41 for the second consecutive year, while sophomore Naren Karur (Santa Clara, Calif. / Saint Francis) placed third in a time of 8:46. In the 5,000-meter run, senior Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College HS) placed first with a time of 15:14 and sophomore Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) took second in a time of 15:24. 

The Tartans distance medley relay team of Yukevich, freshman Zahir Saiyed (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax), freshman Leland Davies (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick High School), and Walsh won the race in a time of 10:49. 

The Tartans will compete next at Denison University on Saturday, February 1 in Granville, Ohio.
