Rich and Breidenbach Set School Records at All-Atlantic Regional Indoor Championships

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Members of the Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team competed at the All-Atlantic Regional Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, hosted by Nazareth College in Rochester, New York.

Freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) broke his own school record on Saturday in the weight throw. The freshman won the event with a throw of 18.93 meters, topping his previous mark of 18.50 meters. Breidenbach's new mark currently ranks sixth in Division III.

Sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) ended the meet second in the heptathlon with 4,359 points. The sophomore placed second in the long jump, 60-meter hurdles and 1,000-meter run. He recorded a mark of 6.43 meters in the long jump, crossed in 8.69 seconds in the hurdles and recorded a career-best time in the 1,000-meter run crossing in 2:58.76. Rich recorded a career-best height in the high jump after placing third, clearing the bar at 1.83 meters. His points scored are the most by a Tartan in the heptathlon.

A pair of freshmen ran in the mile run and placed second and third, respectively. Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) crossed in a career-best time of 4:12.09 while Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) finished in 4:12.62. Sophomore Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) crossed in 1:56.28 in the 800-meter run to place sixth.

Freshmen Luke Blackwell (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) took fourth in the triple jump with a season-best jump of 13.97 meters. Junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.80 meters.

The Tartans will now wait to see the qualifying lists for the NCAA Indoor Championships at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Friday and Saturday, March 11-12. The list will be announced late Sunday night.
