Tartans Host Annual Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Gesling Stadium. The Tartans turned in seven top finishes in a field comprised of Division I, II and III institutions.

The 3,000-meter steeplechase saw the Tartans take the top two spots in personal-best times. Junior Elijah Sech (San Clemente, Calif. / San Clemente) crossed in 9:40.58 and sophomore David Durdaller (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) in 9:42.16.

Graduate student Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put and discus, as he had a a throw of 17.67 meters in the shot and 51.38 meters in the discus in his first meet of the outdoor season. Freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.55 meters while junior Len Huang (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) took third in the discus with a career-best toss of 45.15 meters.

Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) and sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) took first and third in the long jump. Kiefel jumped 7.06 meters and Rich 6.48 meters. Kiefel then won the triple jump with a leap of 14.39 meters with freshman Luke Blackwell (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks) placing second with a jump of 13.79 meters.

Freshman Casey Potrebic (Calistoga, Calif. / Justin-Siena) turned in a top performance in the pole vault as he cleared the bar at 4.15 meters.

Senior Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) turned in a personal-best time of 3:58.20 in the 1,500-meter run to win the race. Sophomore Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) turned in a time of 1:59.20 in the 800-meter run to place third.

Running the 400-meter race for the first time in his collegiate career, junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) took third after crossing in 50.74. Sophomore Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) took second in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.74.

The Tartans freshmen trio swept the top three places in the 3,000-meter run. Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) crossed in 8:42.22, Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) in 8:51.54 and Eamon Brady (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) in 8:54.47.

The Tartans will next compete at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University on Saturday, April 2.
