Carnegie Mellon Lands Three Cross Country and Track & Field Athletes on Capital One Academic All-America Squad

After finding a spot on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's and women’s cross country and track and field less than a month ago, three Carnegie Mellon University senior athletes were selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team for the 2014-15 season; George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) and Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) on the men’s side are joined by Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) on the women’s team.

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – A pair of veteran coaches were appointed to lead the Carnegie Mellon University cross country and track and field programs, as Associate Head Track and Field Coach Gary Aldrich has been promoted to head coach and longtime Notre Dame coach Tim Connelly has been named Head Cross Country and Associate Head Track and Field Coach. Aldrich and Connelly take over following the announcement of Dario Donatelli’s (TPR’81) retirement prior to the start of indoor track and field season

Junior Marc-Daniel Julien is a member of the men’s cross country and track and field teams. He became a two-time Mideast Region runner this past fall after helping the Tartans win the regional for the second time since 2008. He is a three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion in indoor and outdoor track and field. In 2013 Julien was part of the winning 4x400-meter relay and the 4x800-meter relay at the outdoor championships before being a member of the winning 4x800-meter relay team at last year’s outdoor championships. Carnegie Mellon University head men’s cross country coach Dario Donatelli was named NCAA Division III Mideast Region Coach of the Year for the 2014 collegiate season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Donatelli was also named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Coach of the Year following the UAA Championships at the beginning of the month.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday, November 15 with 90 team points, as Widener University finished with 115 points and Johns Hopkins University with 119 points. The regional title marks the second since 2008 for the Tartans.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team traveled to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for the Dickinson College Long-Short Invitational on Saturday, September 20. The Tartans finished fourth in the long race (8k) and third in the short race (4k) as host Dickinson won the 8k and Division II Lock Haven won the 4k. The long race had 36 teams while the short race had 35.

The Tartans who competed against Division I schools Duquesne, LaSalle, St. Joseph’s, Youngstown State and Buffalo were joined by St. Vincent as the two lone Division III schools.
