14 Carnegie Mellon Athletes Named to the 12th Annual UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University had 14 student-athletes named to the 12th Annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced be the league’s office on Wednesday. The 14 Tartans, three men’s cross country, two football, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, men’s tennis and one women’s tennis, received the prestigious honor along with 142 other student-athletes representing all eight UAA member institutions.

For the first time in program history, three Carnegie Mellon University men’s cross country and track and field athletes have been named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans. Junior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) landed a spot on the Men's Cross Country/Track and Field Second Team with seniors Josh Kalapos (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt.Lebanon) and Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) being named to the third team. It marks Karee’s second straight appearance on the team after garnering third team recognition a year ago.

Lebanon, Pa./Mt.Lebanon) and Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) along with junior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field and cross country teams have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Men's Cross Country/Track and Field Academic All-District selections. The honors mark repeat appearances for Kalapos and Karee.

Seven members of the Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team were named to the All-Academic team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In addition, the Tartans earned all-academic team accolades sporting a 3.38 cumulative average.

Banner Fall for Student-Athletes in the Classroom

It was a memorable fall for the Carnegie Mellon Athletics Program, as five of six fall teams advanced to postseason play, the basketball and swimming and diving teams got off to great starts, and the women’s golf team earned a number one national ranking. Four teams competed in the NCAA postseason, including the women’s soccer team’s run to the national semifinals, and the Tartans once again finished the fall 16th in the Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. On top of the competitive success, 104 student-athletes achieved 4.0 grade-point averages (GPA) and more than 60 percent of the student-athletes earned a 3.50 GPA or better.

Carnegie Mellon University head men's cross country coach Tim Connelly was named NCAA Division III Mideast Region Coach of the Year for the 2019 collegiate season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. It marks the second straight season Connelly has received the accolade and it comes following leading the fourth-ranked Tartans to their second consecutive regional title and sixth in school history.

By winning the 2019 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship this past Saturday for the second consecutive season, the Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team automatically qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships which will be hosted by Spalding University at the Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, November 23. It marks the Tartans sixth straight team appearance at the championships and 13th in the last 14 years.

The fourth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships for the second straight year Saturday. The men finished with all seven runners in the top 20 of the race, with an overall score of 55 points, 21 points ahead of second place Johns Hopkins University.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Cross Country Championship on its home course in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Saturday afternoon. The Tartans placed five runners in the top 15 to win the race by four points over Washington University in St. Louis. The meet victory marks the fifth time in school history the Tartans have won the UAA Championships and first since 2016.

The junior led the 7th-ranked Tartans to their fourth first-place showing of the year and fifth top performance against a Division III field when the team won the Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday.
