(TRAFFORD, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team continued action against 20th-ranked Brandeis University on Saturday, April 20, falling 3-2 in game one before game two was suspended in the first inning due to lightning. The Tartans are now 10-20 overall and 3-11 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Judges are 23-2-1 and 8-2.

The Tartans scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on two sacrifice fly outs by freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif./Westridge) and freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King).

The Judges were able to tie the game in the fourth inning when they strung together four hits around two strikeouts against freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach).

The winning run came across the plate in the top of the seventh inning when Jolie Fujita put down a squeeze bunt between the pitcher and third baseman to score Keri Letonen who doubled to lead off the inning.

The Tartans put pressure on the Brandeis defense in the final inning when freshman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) singled to left field to lead off the inning. With two outs, freshman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) reached on an infield single to shortstop and advanced to second when the first baseman dropped the throw.

Sydney Goldman was able to get freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) to ground out to second base to end the inning and the game for her 11th win of the season.

Game two was suspended in the bottom of the first inning with two outs and Song on third base with Johnson at the plate. The game will resume on Sunday, April 21 at 9:00 a.m. at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, Pennsylvania, and be followed by a second game to finish the four-game series.
