Tartans' Offense Stalls in Two Defeats

(CLERMONT, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team dropped two contests on Thursday, March 12 at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Tartans are now 6-4 after a 7-2 defeat to Heidelberg University (6-2) and a 2-0 defeat to Defiance College (5-7).

The Tartans led off the game against Heidelberg with two runs in the first inning with sophomore Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) and sophomore Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) both registering RBIs on groundouts. Heidelberg cut the lead to one with a two-out triple by Casey Moore that scored Bethany Redman who walked.

The Tartans held the lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when Heidelberg scored three, including two off a two-out single. Similarly, the Knights scored three runs with two outs in the sixth inning to pad the lead before Stephanie Drapp retired the order in the seventh on three ground outs to end the game.

A pitcher's duel ensued against Defiance with the Yellow Jackets earning the 2-0 win. Sophomore Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) went the distance for the Tartans, scattering four hits with four strikeouts and six walks to move to 5-1 for the season.

The Yellow Jackets scored once in the second and once in the fifth and then got out of the sixth inning with a defensive effort by the shortstop who faked a throw to first and got sophomore Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) out in a run down before freshman Tessa Bruneau (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) was caught trying to advance to second.

Song, Jette-Kouri and McGee each hit singles for the Tartans against Defiance.

Sydney Zeuch earned the win for Defiance allowing three hits in seven innings.
