Tartans Split in First Home Action of 2021

(TRAFFORD, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted Penn State Behrend on Friday, March 26 for a doubleheader splitting action with a 5-0 win in game one and a 7-6 loss in game two. The Tartans are now 4-4 for the season while the Lions are 3-1.

 

Game 1 - Tartans 5 Penn State Behrend 0

Junior Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) had two doubles, knocked in two runs and scored one herself to lead the Tarans offense in game one. Sophomore Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) also had two hits and an RBI in the game while sophomore Tessa Bruneau (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) scored two runs and recorded a hit. Junior Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) pitched the third shutout of her career, including the second against Penn State Behrend, with a season-best 10 strikeouts.

The Tartans got on the board early after a few errors by the Lions infield put runners on base. Bruneau took off for home as junior Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) stole second. Johnson then doubled to left center for a 2-0 lead. The Tartans took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Johnson grounded into a fielder's choice to plate Bruneau who reached on an infield single, stole second, and advanced to third on a ground out to second by Hu.

The Tartans added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings with junior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) and Finger recording the RBIs.

 

Game 2 - Penn State Behrend 7 Tartans 6

Behrend took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Johnson plated a runner with a fielder's choice to shortstop. The Lions answered with three runs in the top of the second and held a 5-1 advantage until the bottom of the third when the Tartans scored four to tie the game. With the bases loaded, Johnson singled up the middle as the ball deflected off the pitcher's glove and through the infield scoring two. Finger then singled up the middle to score freshman Kiera Boucher (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) who reached on a hit-by-pitch and Johnson.

Behrend took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth with a squeeze bunt by Lauren Olevnik. Two triples in the fifth inning for the Tartans evened the score as Johnson tripled to left center with one out and junior Megan Holquist tripled to the same place with two outs to tie the game again.

With darkness setting in, the Lions were able to score a run in the top of the sixth with two outs when Mackenzie McIntire doubled down the left field line to knock in Maria Jones who stole second on a strike out by freshman pitcher Amanda Smith (New Cumberland, Pa. / Trinity).

Jones entered the game to pitch for Behrend and recorded two strikeouts and a ground out to earn the save.

 

The Tartans are next schedule to host Mt. Aloysius on Sunday, March 28 in a doubleheader to begin at 1:00 p.m.
