Five Honored with All-UAA Softball Recognition

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Five Carnegie Mellon University softball players were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) coaches with recognition on the 2021 UAA Softball All-Association Team. Juniors Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) and Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) were honored for the third season while sophomores Tessa Bruneau (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) and Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) are repeat honorees. Sophomore Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) was honored for the first time.

The Tartans finished the 2021 season with a 15-6-1 record after COVID-19 altered their season plans of a typical 40-game schedule. The third-year program earned its first regional ranking, entering the rankings on April 30 at seventh and finished the regular season ranked eighth. The team compiled a program-best .353 hitting percentage and team ERA of 3.32.

Hu, who hit .472 with 34 hits in 72 at bats and ended the season on a 10-game hitting streak, led the offense. The starting shortstop, Hu also led the team with 21 RBIs and was second on the team with 17 runs scored. Johnson, a utility player for the Tartans who saw some time at catcher and as the designated player, hit .435 with 20 hits in 46 at bats. The sophomore had a slugging percentage of .652 with one home run, two triples, and three doubles, and knocked in 14 runs while scoring 14 herself. 

Finger hit .387 in her second campaign with 24 hits and 17 RBIs. Starting at third base, Finger had a .959 fielding percentage with 21 putouts and 26 assists. A lefty-slapper, Bruneau followed Finger in hitting percentage with a .359 average. The centerfielder led the team in at bats with 78 while collecting the second-most hits on the team with 28 and a hitting streak of 13 through the season. Bruneau also led the team with 12 stolen bases in 17 attempts. 

McGee made 10 appearances in the pitching circle, with seven complete games in eight starts. Four of her complete games were shutouts and her 6-1 record brings her career win total to 19. She led the team in strikeouts for the third consecutive year, registering 93 for the season with 11.10 strikeouts per seven innings pitched. Five times she struck out 10 or more batters with a career-best 15 against Mount Aloysius. She finished with a 1.43 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched and now has a career ERA of 2.46 with 283 career strikeouts.
