Tartans Open Home UAA Series

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team dropped a pair of games to Brandeis University on Friday, April 8 at Plum Senior High School in its University Athletic Association (UAA) home series. The Judges won 7-2 in game one and 10-1 in game two. The Tartans are now 13-11 for the season and 4-5 in the UAA while the Judges moved to 16-10 and 4-6.

Game 1 – 7-2 loss

The Tartans hit two doubles and a home run in the game but those were the only hits Alex Cohen allowed in the game while her batters put 11 hits in the box score to help her earn a complete-game victory.

The Judges scored five runs in the top of the third inning to chase sophomore Amanda Smith and later scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior Izzy Bermudez (Austin, Texas / Dripping Springs) broke up Cohen's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to center field.

The other run for the Tartans came in the fifth inning when sophomore Kiera Boucher (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) hit a sacrifice fly that scored senior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) who led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Allie Rome (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro South).

Game 2 – 10-1 Loss

Sophomore Erika Heffernen (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) hit an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead before the Judges tied the game in the top of the fourth.

Brandeis broke the game open in the fifth inning with nine runs to take a 10-1 lead and then held the lead to close the game in five innings for the first-day sweep.

The series continues on Saturday, April 9 with two games on the schedule starting at 12:00 p.m.
