Smith Earns First UAA Shutout, Johnson Homers in Shortened Game Two

(CRANBERRY TWP., Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team shut out New York University, 7-0, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday, April 2 before falling 6-4 in a six-inning game shortened due to travel times. The Tartans are now 11-13 overall and 3-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while NYU is 14-8 and 3-5.

Game 1

• The Tartans scored runs in five of six innings and junior Amanda Smith scattered three hits and struck out six batters to earn the program's first shutout in UAA play through two-and-a-half seasons.
• Junior Kiera Boucher and sophomore Faith Lawrence each recorded a triple with Lawrence also hitting a double.
• Lawrence led the team with three RBIs while senior Piper Johnson had two RBIs.
• The Tartans first scored two runs in the first inning with a sacrifice flyout by Lawrence and a single up the middle by Johnson with two outs.
• Freshman Kira Monji put down a sacrifice bunt in the second inning to move freshman Koko Sagae and sophomore Libby Eichberger up a base after each reached on singles. Boucher then ran out an infield hit and Sagae scored before Eichberger got caught between second and third.
• Johnson singled for the second time in the game in the third inning to knock in sophomore Olivia Van Zandt who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Lawrence.
• Junior Erika Heffernen recorded an RBI in the third inning when she grounded out to shortstop with the bases loaded, scoring Johnson.
• Lawrence tripled to right field with two outs in the fourth inning to score Boucher who walked with one out.
• The Tartans left two runners on base in the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth when Lawrence doubled to right center field and Van Zandt scored from first, sliding under the tag at the plate.

Game 2

• NYU put up five runs in the third inning off three hits and one defensive error by the Tartans. Freshman Haley Pucci finished the inning by getting Lily Candelaria to foul out to first base.
• Monji tripled with one out in the bottom of the third inning and scored on a single to left center field by Boucher.
• Sagae turned a double play in the fourth inning by stepping on third base and throwing to first for the final two outs of the inning to keep NYU from adding any runs.
• After three quick outs in the bottom of the fourth, NYU scored their sixth run in the fifth off an error by the Tartans.
• The Tartans added a run in the fifth inning after Heffernen singled up the middle, stole second, and forced a throwing error by the first baseman after a ground out by Monji to score the team's second run.
• With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Sagae was hit by a pitch and Johnson homered to center field before NYU closed the game with a ground out to shortstop.
