Peel and West Named All-Tournament at the Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Classic

(PITTSBURGH Pa.) - Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Classic, as the Tartans dropped a 59-54 decision to Otterbein University Saturday, November 17. The loss evens the Tartans' record to 1-1 while the Cardinals also move to 1-1.

Carnegie Mellon grabbed a 10-5 lead early thanks to a pair of foul shots by Peel, but the Cardinals scored 13 unanswered points to claim the visitor's first lead of the game at 16-10 at the midway point of the first stanza.  

Otterbein continued to hold the lead the rest of the half as they took a 27-22 lead into the locker room. For the second straight night, the Tartans outrebounded their opponent in the first half, as they hauled in 20 boards to the Cardinals 16. Junior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) led all scorers at the break, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the first twenty minutes.

In the second half, Otterbein continued to maintain its lead as it went up by as many as 19 before Carnegie Mellon used a 19-4 run to close the gap to four in the closing minute of play.  That was as close as the Tartans came, but during the run West scored 13 of her game-high 18 points.

Carnegie Mellon shot 38% from the floor while Otterbein shot 35%. Carnegie Mellon edged the Cardinals on the glass as well 38-36. Peel finished the game recording her 14th career double-double hauling in a game-high 13 rebounds and scoring 10 points. The senior added a game-high four blocks in the setback.

Otterbein's Allie Leopard led the team with 11 points while all-tournament selection Hannah Day along with Amariah Huck each had 10 points. Day also recorded a team-high eight rebounds and added two steals.

The Tartans will be back on the hardwood Tuesday, November 20 as they entertain the Wolverines of Grove City College. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
