Peel Becomes Ninth Tartan to Score 1,000 Points

(BEREA, Ohio) – Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) of the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team became the ninth Tartan to score 1,000 points, as the Tartans dropped a 67-57 decision at Baldwin Wallace Wednesday, January 2.  The loss moves the Tartans record to 8-3 heading into University Athletic Association (UAA) play while the Yellow Jackets even their record at 6-6.

Carnegie Mellon led 5-4 after a pair of made free throws by junior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) two minutes into action.  The Yellow Jackets then rattled off eight straight points claiming a 12-5 advantage before extending the lead to 17-7.

Over the next four minutes, the Tartans scored eight straight, starting with two buckets by Shaw, to cut the deficit to 17-15 with 6:21 to play in the first stanza.  Carnegie Mellon then grabbed its first lead since two minutes into the contest when sophomore MacKenzie Boyd (Plano, Texas/Plano West) was sent to the charity stripe and connected both attempts with five minutes to play making the score 19-18.  On the Yellow Jackets next possession down the court, they regained the lead and held it the rest of the stanza going into the locker room with a 32-25 advantage.

Sophomore Gabrielle West's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) jumper with 10:52 to play in the contest pulled the Tartans to within four points at 42-38, but that was as close as the visitor's got in the second half. Baldwin Wallace led by as many as 15 before holding on for the 10 point victory.

Carnegie Mellon shot 34% from the floor while Baldwin Wallace shot 41%. Carnegie Mellon edged the Yellow Jackets on the glass 48-9. West led the Tartans with 12 points and had season highs of seven rebounds and four steals.  Shaw and Boyd each finished with nine points while Peel ended the game scoring eight points.  Peel now has 1,002 points for her career.
