Tartans Fall at Home to Chicago in UAA Tilt

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted the University of Chicago on Sunday, February 8 in an University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. Sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) recorded her ninth double-double of the season but it was not enough to top the Maroons, as the Tartans fell 75-56.

The lead changed hands four times in the first nine minutes with the Tartans (11-9, 2-7) leading by as many as six points after two free throws by freshman Anna Novak (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) put the home team up 10-4 with 3:12 gone by. A jumper by junior Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) tied the score at 14-14 three minutes later.

On the ensuing Chicago (14-6, 8-1) possession, Ali Shaw put back an offensive board to give Chicago what would be the final lead of the game. Those two points added to the 11 the Maroons scored off offensive rebounds in the half as they went on to lead 40-24 at the break.

The difference in the game came in the first half, as Chicago shot 12-of-30 and the Tartans 9-of-30 from the field. The Maroons also got to the foul line 17 times for the period and made 14.

Murphy went to work in the second half, scoring 11 of her team-high 19 points. She also pulled down 12 rebounds and tied a career-high with six blocks for the contest. Otto also tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Maroons were led by Claire Devaney's 21 points and 10 boards while Ellie Greiner scored 11 off the bench.

The Tartans will next travel to Brandeis University (11-9, 3-6) for a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday, February 13.
