Mayberger Ties Single-Season Assist Record in Setback to Brandeis

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, February 7, falling 72-66 to the Judges. The Tartans are now 15-5 on the season and 4-5 in the UAA while the Judges move to 11-9 and 4-5.

The Tartans started the game on a 6-0 run before the Judges returned the favor plus three to take a 9-6 lead with 3:42 to go in the first period. A 15-8 lead for the Judges at the end of the first was turned into a 32-25 halftime lead for the Tartans.

The Tartans used an 11-2 run to take back the lead, 19-17, and aside from Noel Hodges tying the game at 19-19, held the lead through the rest of the half. The Tartans shot 41.4% for the half and outrebounded the Judges, 21-16, while the Judges shot 30.8%.

Brandeis turned their first half shooting woes around and scored 27 points in the third quarter. The Tartans held a 44-42 lead before missing eight straight from the field, closing the final four minutes of the quarter going 1-of-10 from the floor, yet only trailed by three, 52-49, heading into the final period.

The Judges built their lead to seven and the Tartans pulled within two but never regained the advantage as the visitors took the game, 72-66.

Junior Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) led all scorers with 19 points while senior Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored 16, senior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored 13 and junior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) finished with 12. Murphy and Poss both grabbed seven rebounds while freshman Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) collected seven assists to tie the season assist record with 117.

The Judges had a balanced attack with five recording double figures. Frankie Pinto led with 14 points off the bench.

The Tartans will next face the University of Chicago (12-8, 4-5) on Friday, February 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Chicago.
