Tartans Don't Survive Rough Shooting Night Against 8-3 Albion

(DELAWARE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team faced Albion College in the Ohio Wesleyan University Hoops for Hope tournament on Friday, December 29 in its first game following a 10-day holiday break. Albion, now 8-3 on the year, topped the Tartans (7-3), 53-38.

The Tartans led 17-7 at the close of the first quarter behind eight points from sophomore Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North). Pereira made 3-of-4 from the floor including two long range attempts as the Tartans shot 50.0%.

Albion made just 2-of-17 shot attempts in the first quarter but rebounded in the second stanza to connect on five shots while the Tartans made just three from the field. The score sat at 25-20 in favor of the Tartans at the break.

The second half turned away from the Tartans as they tallied just 13 points while the Britons shot 40.0% (14-35) to make up the deficit and take the 15-point win.

The Britons took control of the game in the third quarter when they went on a 12-0 run over the final six minutes. That run ballooned to 20-0, before freshman Victoria Avery (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) made a layup with 5:12 to play in the game.

Pereira finished with 10 points to lead the Tartans who shot 81.8% (9-11) from the free throw line but made a season low 23.2% from the field. Pereira also led the team on the glass with a career-best nine rebounds while sophomore Megan Jaeb (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) scored a season-best eight points. The Britons held sophomore Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton), the leading scorer for the Tartans, to three points and her first game in single digits this season.

The Tartans will return to the court at Ohio Wesleyan against the host Battling Bishops (1-9) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 30.
