Mayberger Sets Career Assists Record in Hard-Fought Loss to Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Junior guard Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) set the career assists record Friday night when the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans dropped the contest, 66-64, to the Eagles and are now 9-12 overall and 1-9 in the UAA. The Eagles moved to 11-10 and 5-5 with the two-point victory.

Mayberger finished the game with four assists and now has 328 for her career, passing Jeanine Megahan's number of 325 set in 1994. The junior also grabbed eight rebounds for the Tartans who were led in scoring by sophomore Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair). Higgins finished with 21 points while sophomores Laurel Pereira (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville North) and Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) each scored 12 points. Sophomore Laura Ochsner (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) pulled down nine rebounds and picked up three steals.

The Tartans took a 22-11 first-quarter lead after converting 13-of-15 free throws to go with four shots from the field. The Eagles turned the ball over eight times in the quarter which the Tartans turned into 10 points. An evenly played second quarter saw the Tartans lead 39-30 at the break. Higgins led the Tartans with 13 points while the defense held Emory's Ashley Oldshue, the team's leading scorer, to four first-half points.

The second half was a different story for Oldshue as the Eagles fed her the ball inside and she made 4-of-8 attempts to score 11 points and help the Eagles chip away at the Tartan lead to trail 52-49 going into the final 10 minutes of action.

The Tartans held onto the lead until a 6-0 run by the Eagles from 8:07 to 6:54 gave the Eagles a 58-54 lead. The Tartans would come back to tie the game twice on layups by Higgins but the Eagles took their final lead with 1:46 to play.

Oldshue finished the game with 22 points and nine rebounds while Erin Lindahl scored 16 points, including a putback bucket with seven seconds left to make the score 64-60.

The Tartans will next host 20th-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m.
