Filiere Moves Into Eighth on All-Time Scoring List in Tartans' 71-49 Setback at NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday night at New York University and fell 71-49. The Tartans are now 8-9 overall and 1-5 in UAA play while the Violets move to 14-3, 4-2.

Carnegie Mellon shot 37.7% from the floor for the game while NYU shot 43.6%. Senior Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) moved into eighth on the program's all-time scoring list and now has 1,169 points for her career after scoring 10 for the Tartans. Sophomore Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich.) led the Tartans with 12 points.

Janean Cuffee led the Violets with a game-high 20 points. Katie Foos finished with 18 points while Jenny Walker led all players with 11 rebounds.

NYU started the game scoring the first seven points and pushed its lead to 15-2 at the midway point of the first quarter. During the stretch, Foos connected on three triples. The home team maintained control of the quarter and led 28-13 at the conclusion after shooting 56% (10-18) from the floor over the first 10 minutes of play.

The Violets took their largest lead of the half with 6:49 to play when Cuffee connected on a triple from the top of the arc to make the score 39-19. Carnegie Mellon then used a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the deficit in half at 39-29. Foos then hit two three-point buckets sandwiched by a Filiere jumper to close the second quarter with the score 45-31.

Over a six-minute span in the third quarter NYU used a 12-0 run and grabbed a 60-36 advantage. Two jumpers in the closing two minutes of the third quarter by Carnegie Mellon's sophomore Emily Archer (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) left the score 61-40 heading into the fourth.

NYU outscored the Tartans 10-9 in the fourth quarter and went on for the 71-49 victory.

Carnegie Mellon returns to the court on Sunday, February 2 with a 2:00 p.m. tip at Brandeis University.
